Miles' " Goin' to Meetin' " clothes

I must admit, I am one of those weird people who insists that you need to look your very best when going to church. This means putting on your "Sunday Best." Now, I hold myself and my family to this standard because it's how I was raised. I was taught that you (as a woman) don't go to church without nylons and men shouldn't be without a dress shirt and tie. Because this has been ingrained in me since childhood, I have this stubborn refusal to let Miles go to church in anything but "dress clothes." So, for his first Sunday to church, he got dressed in his finest. I do have to say that he is the most handsome little man ever--he takes after his Daddy! There is nothing better than seeing a "man" in dress clothes.

First TUB bath

Once Mile's umbilical chord finally fell off, we were so excited to be able to give him his first tub bath. He didn't enjoy the sponge baths we gave him too much so we didn't have high hopes for his enjoyment of being submersed in water. We were right. He actually didn't mind being in the watter too much, it was the actual washing he had a hard time with. Oh well, sometimes we have to do what we don't like!

There is nothing better than a cuddling clean baby freshly slathered in baby lotion!

Daddy Son bonding time

Aaron works evenings now so that when I have to go back to work, we won't have to get a babysitter. It has been such a blessing to be with Aaron and Miles every morning and to watch them interact with each other. Aaron is such a great daddy! He loves holding Miles and playing with him. He has even played the saxaphone for him (which didn't even wake the little guy up! Let's hope he stays that sound of a sleeper!).

One of Aaron's favorite activities is reading to Miles. It is so precious to watch because Miles will just look up at Aaron as he reads. He knows his dady's voice and loves listening to him.

There is nothing better than watching my two favorite men together! I am so blessed!

Mom Conner's visit

The weekend after Miles joined our family, Judi came from St. George to spend the weekend. What a joy it was to have her here with us for the weekend and to watch her marvel at her newest grandchild. She was such a help as she was our diaper duty and baby burper for the whole weekend (we releived her of these duties during the middle of the night! ☺ We didn't do much but just hung out and enjoyed each others company.

The Sunday she was here, Jerm, Nichole and little Xander came to meet Miles and cooked us a phenominal roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy. For those of you who know the Johnson family, we take our food seriously and Jeremy is a great cook. It was a special treat to be able to share a meal with them and to have my mother in law here to enjoy it with us. While they were here, Judi got some cute videos which for some reason are not posting. I will have her email me some pictures from her weekend here because she definitely documented it well. We love you Mom and were so happy to have you here.

Bringing Miles Home

We came home from the hospital on Satuday, February 27th. Two of my really good friends, Ruann and Karen, decorated our house and put signs out front announcing his arrival. Their sweet gesture made these tired parents smile and feel so loved. I feel horrible that we didn't get any pictures!

Aaron and I were very worn out by the time we left the hospital. I have to say that I did not want to post this next picture showing me looking so bedraggled, but decided that for the sake of posterity, I had to show the day we brought him home.

My family in Castle Rock (Ryan, Laurel,, Teyghan, & Kiari) came down to welcome us home. It was so sweet to watch Teyghan and Kiari welcome Miles into the world. He's already so loved!

First Bath

Aaron was able to accompany Miles to the nursery and help give him his first bath. The nurse asked him if he wanted to do it, but Aaron felt like he would break little Miles, so the nurse did most of it as she taught Aaron how to do it. As you can see from the pictures, he didn't like it too much! Now that we have him home, he likes bathtime a little more, but not much.

The birth of our miracle boy

It has been a long five and a half years waiting for this point when I could hold a precious little infant in my arms and call him our son. Our prayers were finally answered and on Thursday, February 25, 2010 Miles Aaron Conner joined our family at 6:38 in the morning after keeping his mother up all night for several nights in a row (just preparing us for later, I suppose!) He weighed 7 pounds, 9 ½ ounces and was 19 inches long. Pretty good sized for being two weeks early! Anyway, back to the beginning of his birth story….

After a false alarm on Sunday, February 22, and being sent home from the hospital I refused to go back until I “knew” it was time. Despite pretty constant contractions all Monday and Tuesday, I still didn’t go. At my doctor’s appointment on Tuesday the 23, Dr. Russell could see how exhausted I was but that I was progressing. He told me that if he could, he would send me to the hospital right then and break my water but they frown upon that if you aren’t 39 weeks along (I was 38). He did reassure me that should I return to the hospital at any time, he would admit me and we would have this baby. Contractions picked up that evening and became very strong during the night. But, not wanting to get sent home at 3:00 in the morning, I refused to go anywhere (plus, I would have had to go downstairs to the guest room to wake up my husband, where he was trying to get some uninterrupted sleep, and I didn’t have the energy!) I again went to work and only made it through about half the day. I came home and rested and let Aaron take care of me (it was his day off) until around 5:30 when I decided we better eat dinner because we were going to the hospital and I was going to have this baby.

We were admitted around 8:00 pm and Dr. Russell broke my water at around 9:30 pm to help move things along (Dr. Russell knew me well and knew that I didn’t want to be in labor for a long period of time—he figured the past few days of constant contractions was enough!). He said that if at midnight I hadn’t progressed, we’d start Pitocin. The contractions kept coming stronger, longer, and more intense. It came to the point where I decided that if they were going to be giving me Pitocin, I was going to give in and have the epidural. So, right before midnight, I received the epidural (Ahhhh…relief; As Dr. Russell told me several times—God let us invent the epidural for a reason) and the Pitocin drip.

Our sweet labor and delivery nurse Helen (who was beyond amazing!) really wanted us to have baby Miles before her shift ended at 7:00 am. I told her that I would do my best! Around 5:45 am on the 25th I felt the need to push, so we started pushing. Dr. Russell arrived at about 6:15 and about 15 minutes later, our beautiful baby Miles was born. I remember the nurse telling me I had to open my eyes and look down so that I could see him. I was so busy concentrating on getting him here, that my eyes were squeezed shut. What an amazing feeling of overwhelming love and gratitude filled me as he was placed on my stomach and I held him for the first time. I looked at Aaron, who had tears rolling down his cheeks. What a miracle! I never thought I could love Aaron more than I already did, but that love grew so much as I saw him hold our baby for the first time.

There is a country song by George Strait that talks about having a baby that says “I saw God today.” Truly, we saw God as we witnessed the birth of our first born son. What a blessing he already is to us!

Updates....

So, with the birth of our first baby looming over us, I feel compelled to update our blog again. Miles Aaron is due to come in 2 weeks, but the way things are looking, we may be heading to the hospital a lot sooner (already been once today and sent home, but contractions are still coming...). Anyway...

I just have to take a minute to express my love and gratitude to all the freinds and family who have been such a support to us and so loving. There has never been a time when Aaron and I have felt more loved and cared for than throughout this pregnancy. Thank you to all of you!!! :o) It has meant so much to us...more than you will ever know. Every gift, every thought, every smile, every kindnes...it hasn't gopne unnoticed. THANK YOU ALL!

One of the amazing things that my brother did was paint a mural in our nursery. A few weeks ago, my dear sweet, amazing sister-in-laws threw a shower for Aaron's and my coworkers (another super amazing, thoughtful thing to add to our list). During that shower, my brother painted our nursery wall. Below is a picture. Isn't he just AMAZING??!?!?!? This was all done free habd and in about 4-5hours. Yeah, he got the talent in the family! Thanks Bro! We love you tons and I know Miles will love his room!

THANKSGIVING IN UTAH

I don’t have any pictures, but the Johnson clan gathered and Mom & Dad Johnson’s for Thanksgiving this year. I found it ironic that we all traveled from Colorado to be there at my parents’ house! It was so fun having us all home on the “farm” again. What an adventure it was having 14 of us eating Thanksgiving dinner in my parents’ small house. I am so thankful for an AMAZING family and feel so blessed to have their support and love. It was so fun to be surrounded by nieces and nephews and just love on them all.

We had 2 baby showers for little Miles while we were there. Aaron’s mom threw one for the Van de Merwes. While it was a bit rushed, a fun time was had by all and it was wonderful to see all the aunts and cousins. My mom threw one for my side of the family and some of my close friends. We ended up having 50 people show up. I am SOOOOO incredibly blessed to be surrounded by family and friends who love us and support us! I never really realized just how many people there are out there that love us until they gathered together in celebration of our miracle. After these 2 showers, baby Miles will be the best dressed baby in the whole state of Colorado.

After an uneventful 9 hour drive home, I promptly went to bed. All the fun and excitement wore me, Aaron, and baby Miles out!!

FINALLY! UPDATES ARE HERE!

Oh my goodness!! It has been forever since I have updated our blog. I am such a slacker! Now that it is December and I have a few minutes, I’ll try to catch ya’ll up on the last 4 months in the lives of the Colorado Springs Conners:

We found out we are having a baby boy! We are going to name him Miles Aaron. Aaron is a great lover of jazz music and really enjoys the work of Miles Davis. We have had the name Miles picked out for several years and as soon as I saw the heartbeat at 7 weeks, I knew this was our little Miles. My “mother’s intuition” was confirmed in October.

He is already living up to his namesake. He starts “dancing” whenever I am listening to jazz music or whenever his daddy pulls out his saxophone. Since Aaron and I are both lovers of music, this is a blessing!

He is still growing healthy and strong. I am doing well and coping with the changes that come along with pregnancy. It is the most amazing thing to feel him move and to have him respond to our voices. We thank Heavenly Father every day for this amazing miracle.

Because of where I work, he is the most photographed baby ever. Here are a few fun pictures of him from the uterus. He is going to have Aaron’s nose and my lips.
